Tickets for sale for Azkena Rock Festival 2024 on Friday, 10 November at 10 a.m.
Azkena Rock Festival turns on the amps again and turns up the volume to announce its return on the 20, 21, and 22 of June 2024 at Mendizabala, Vitoria-Gasteiz. ARF has always been known for giving rock & roll all the space it deserves in all its extension. True to the festival’s identity, and proof of this is the lineup we are advancing today, with Queens Of The Stone Age, Sheryl Crow, Arde Bogotá, Glen Hansard, and Ty Segall among the new bands and artists to confirm their attendance.
It is time for the appointment with live music you cannot miss, and in gratitude to all the people who have walked with us throughout these 22 years of history, the festival is making available a presale, starting tomorrow and until Thursday, exclusively for those who have attended any of its previous editions. The tickets will be on sale for the general public on Friday, 10 November, at 10 a.m. on the Tickets page.
Queens Of The Stone Age is hitting ARF 24 full force with their new album, in which they write In Times New Roman that they are one of the most popular bands right now and members in their own right of the Olympus of rock. No wonder the Azkena crowd agrees that the best live performance in the festival’s history was QOTSA in 2011, the last time Josh Homme’s band visited Basque Country. The bond with the band is strong, plus the first festival to make them headliners was ARF 2005. From California, their heavy guitars will yet again leave their mark on Mendizabala.
We are pleased to announce that on this edition of the Azkena Rock Festival, we will be joined by Sheryl Crow, a recognized figure in American music who last visited our country over two decades ago and has recently been in the limelight due to a documentary about her released recently which reflects her struggle both in life and music, reaffirming Sheryl as a feminist icon. The former backup singer to Michael Jackson for 18 months proved that she had the personality and the courage necessary to start her own career and to produce bestselling albums in which she made all the decisions. Her ability to play with different styles including country, rock, pop, folk, and blues, has led not only to generating timeless hits but also to transcend rock and go beyond. Her list of collaborations throughout her career is endless, but some noteworthy mentions include rock legends like the Rolling Stones, Jason Isbell, Loretta Lynn, Johnny Cash, Stevie Nicks, and Willie Nelson.
They are sometimes considered the saviors of rock at the state level, but what is for sure is that Arde Bogotá is riding the wave and selling out concerts at every stop of their new tour. With a thoughtful production and powerful and emotional lyrics, their discography is strongly influenced by bands like Arctic Monkeys, Foo Fighters, and Héroes del Silencio. Arde Bogotá is also one of the most popular bands on the social media channels of the Azkena Rock Festival.
A first-rate lineup
As usual, the lineup of Azkena has unquestionable gems.
Glen Hansard arrives with a new album released just two weeks ago. The Irish artist learned the trade as a street musician, as does the character he plays in the film Once, which made him one of the few independent authors with an Oscar for Best Original Song. This baggage gave him the experience necessary to be vulnerable on stage and make each live performance epic.
Prolific and eclectic are the two adjectives that best define Ty Segall, who mixes rock, psychedelia, and folk and always nails it.
St. Paul & The Broken Bones is a soul band that was formed in Alabama in 2012 with a retro sound that they make their own.
From Nashville comes the neo-psychedelia and dark blues of All Them Witches, the generational succession for those who love Blue Cheer and Black Sabbath.
The Detroit Cobras come from the garage scene of RoboCop’s city and have just included Marcus Durant as vocalist, who returns to Azkena after his memorable performance with MC50 in 2018.
The Rain Parade was one of the bands that emerged in the Paisley Underground scene in the early eighties, created by an alliance of West Coast groups searching for inspiration in the psychedelic era of the sixties. Their performance at ARF will be the only one in the country, and in it, they will introduce their first studio album in over 30 years.
Nearly two decades after the death of singer Kike Turmix, the historic punk band from Madrid The Pleasure Fuckers comes together for a single performance at Azkena Rock Festival, for which they will be joined by vocalist Scott Drake from The Humpers.
Influenced by Fleetwood Mac and Led Zeppelin, Azkena welcomes from Ireland the powerful and young Dea Matrona, a true display of classic and guitar-filled rock.
Rock with a Basque Country label
Basque Country and Navarre are historically rich regions for sourcing quality rock bands. This time around, we are presenting a distinguished selection, including the comeback of Π L.T., the metal band formed in the 90s in Mungia that, after a short-lived reunion in 2017, returns to play hymns like Hil da jainkoa which spread beyond national borders.
The punk Navarre band Lendakaris Muertos has legions of fans who love their music, a cross between protest and farce, so much that their support has remained strong after two decades on the road.
The heavy rainfall on the evening of the last day of ARF 23 prevented us from enjoying two powerful names of the current Basque rock scene which are again included in the lineup: Brigade Loco, a punk band with an incredible base of followers, and Ezpalak, a reference of alternative music in the Basque language in recent years.
They will be joined by Moonshine Wagon, a band that is a reference in heavy-bluegrass and hails from Vitoria-Gasteiz, and Txopet, members of the new alternative rock scene in Bilbao and recipients (as were Π L.T. back in their day) of the Gaztea demo contest, a competition known for its good taste.
Raisa Álava designs the image of ARF 2024
The poster of this edition has been created by the artist and illustrator from the Álava province of Basque Country, Raisa Álava, who also authored the poster for Tour 2023 and pieces for The New York Times. Comics and music are two of her customary references, and on this occasion, she was inspired by the venues where bands practice, pedals, and jack cables –essential components for electric guitars.
The Azkena Rock Festival, or ARF for its loyal fans, is the par excellence rock n’ roll festival, an event you cannot miss if you love this musical style in all its shades as much as we do. ARF has been making rock n’ roll history for 22 years, with some of the greatest international stars of the genre since its first edition. A total of 48,500 rock lovers attended the last edition of the Azkena Rock Festival. This appointment with rock n’ roll returns to Vitoria-Gasteiz, the Green Capital, on the 20, 21, and 22 of June 2024.
