John Fogerty triumphs on the second night of Azkena Rock Festival, bringing all his classics back to life.

FECHA

The second day of Azkena Rock Festival was an intergenerational celebration — a day that reaffirmed the power of live music, shared emotion, and a sonic legacy that continues to beat strong in Vitoria-Gasteiz. From midday in the heart of the city to the final song under the stars of Mendizabala, rock remains a living ceremony.

TODAY’S DAY IN 8 GREAT MOMENTS

1. John Fogerty: anthems that need no introduction

John Fogerty is a true American treasure—no doubt about it. The Californian delivered one of those unforgettable performances that etch themselves into our collective memory, just like his previous appearance at the festival back in 2017. From the very first chords, his set—blending solo work with the timeless anthems he wrote for Creedence Clearwater Revival—turned Mendizabala into one massive choir. A masterclass in American rock and a heartfelt celebration of nostalgia at its finest.

2. Laurie Wright kicks off the day from the heart of Vitoria-Gasteiz

The Plaza de la Virgen Blanca once again transformed into an open, free-access stage, and Laurie Wright had the honor of kicking off the day with a vibrant and heartfelt performance. The young Brit, backed by names like Liam Gallagher and Pete Doherty, proved that his stage charisma goes far beyond his years. A high-energy start in front of an enthusiastic crowd.

3. Lucinda Williams: Southern poetry at dusk

Lucinda Williams returned to Azkena with the poise and warmth of someone who knows how to make every word count. Backed by an exceptional band, her performance flowed effortlessly between country, rock, and melancholy with striking elegance. Each song was a story, and each silence a shared sigh with an audience that holds deep admiration for this beloved festival icon.

4. Robert Jon & The Wreck: a breeze of Californian spirit in Mendizabala

With powerful guitars and captivating melodies steeped in classic vibes, Robert Jon & The Wreck delivered a set drenched in the soul of the ’70s and Southern rock. Today they presented their new album exclusively, connecting with the audience through a warm, timeless sound.

5. TXIKI ARF: Rock is also passed down

The rock school with no exams or grades—just pure fun. For the second year in a row, families have been able to enjoy Azkena together through concerts, workshops, and activities that lit up today and will be back tomorrow, Saturday, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Rathole tent in Trashville.

6. The rage, sweat, and social awareness of C.O.F.F.I.N

Australian band C.O.F.F.I.N connected with the Mendizabala crowd through an abrasive, urgent, no-holds-barred live show. Formed when they were barely teenagers, the group blended wild riffs, punk attitude, and a message that was as provocative as it was committed. Behind their party aesthetic and explosive energy, they made it clear there’s room for social awareness too, delivering direct messages against racism and homophobia. A sonic whirlwind that left the audience wanting more.

7. La Estrella Azul: from the big screen to the stage

Javier Macipe, winner of the Goya for Best New Director, and Pepe Lorente, Best New Actor—both for the film La Estrella Azul—brought the movie’s soundtrack to life at Mendizabala. Their performance paid tribute to the late band Más Birras, the songbook of its frontman Mauricio Aznar, and, more broadly, to all forgotten artists and unsung geniuses.

8. Attitude and timeless classics in Turbonegro’s return to Vitoria-Gasteiz

Swedish band Turbonegro returned to Mendizabala with their unmistakable blend of glam, punk, and hard rock, delivering a set packed with anthems like “Get It On” and “All My Friends Are Dead.” As expected, the Oslo natives brought plenty of attitude, powering through an energetic performance filled with constant interaction with a crowd eager to sing along to every classic.

The final day of the festival kicks off tomorrow with Kitty, Daisy & Lewis at Plaza de la Virgen Blanca, setting the tone for a high-intensity closing chapter. Gates at Mendizabala open at 5:00 p.m., with Eh, Mertxe! striking the first chord. The evening will then feature major acts like The Flaming Lips, the legendary Manic Street Preachers in their only show in the country, Margo Price, Dead Kennedys, and The Devils. A day designed to wrap up the festival with an emotional and sonic explosion.
